Q: Chevrolet Malibu?
Is the 2006 Chevrolet Malibu LT for 10,000 dollars with 40,000 Mileage a good buy? Is it a good car also?
A: I’ve been fixing cars for almost 25 years. If it were up to me, everyone would drive Malibus. I stick with Toyota. And I know how to spell CAMRY! And M-A-L-I-B-U.
Q: What could be the problem in my Chevrolet Malibu car?
Every one to two weeks I have to add Dexcool coolant to the tank of my Chevrolet Malibu 2000 car. The car has 78,000 miles. The tank appears to be intact. It has not heated up to the point of turning off but sometimes it has a burnout odor. Where could be the problem?
A: If you don’t see an obvious leak check the oil and see if your getting water in the pan. Many GM V-6 engines had a problem at about your mileage with the lower intake plenum gasket. If thats it you will have water in the oil.
Q: I am interested in a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu, its my first car and im 19! What do u think?
I am looking at the 2005 Chevrolet Malibu and the Malibu Maxx vehicles. I REALLY like the way these cars look not to mention all of the GREAT features that come with these cars at a much lower price than other cars.
This will be my first car and i was wondering what you think of this as my first car? Price is not a problem just not to exceed $10,000.
Thanks!
A: take a long look at the malibu maxx Lt. it has a 6″ longer wheelbase but is slightly shorter overall than the malibu which gives you a lot more rear seat room, its a 5 door (sports wagon) that can haul a lot more, rear moon roof, reclining rear seats and a SAAB chassis.
try to find a LT with fog lights.
btw malibu’s with the V6 get great hwy fuel mileage (30 to 34mpg)
Q: How can I disconnect the anti-theft device installed on my Chevrolet Malibu?
Can anyone please guide me where I could get an owners’ Manual for Chevrolet (Malibu). I bought a 1998 model and the anti-theft device installed in it sometimes switches on automatically as if I am stealing my own car. I would like to disconnect it as no mechanic here knows how to do it.
Many thanks to you Jim. It really worked and now no trouble with the anti-theft device.
A: You need to cut the yellow wire going to the Passlock resistor at the ignition cylinder, while it’s running…the security light will stay on (unless you remove the bulb), but the annoying 10-15 minute delay in starting will go away…info, with pics, below…

Q: How to lock Chevrolet Malibu 2004-2005 but not to engage security system?
How to lock Chevrolet Malibu 2004-2005 but not to engage security system? Thing is my alarm goes off with no reason many times during a day, this is really annoying and gets worst. I cannot locate and fix original issue (don’t know how and don’t have money for garage) , so I would like to know how to lock the car but keep security system Off.
I figured out it myself. To lock the car not engaging alarm – lock the car by pressing down door lever on drivers door (all others dors shoul be locked already)
A: there should be a lock on the driver door inside, lock it with that and it shouldn’t go off; it works for our cars so it should work for yours
Q: What is wrong with my 1998 Chevrolet Malibu?
I have noticed it becoming hard to start also it will chug and bog down around 30mph when accelerating. I have noticed it overheating and there is a little bit of smoke when I first start it but only for a second. I have not replaced the spark plugs or the oxygen sensors since I bought it and do not know if the previous owner did either could that be the problem. Help
1998 Chevrolet Malibu with the 3.1 V6 and 157000 miles.
A: You may have a myriad of different problems maybe all related but maybe independent of each other. Lets take things on one at a time…You failed to mention if the check engine light is on so I will assume it isn’t.
Make sure their aren’t any leaks along the intake manifold or that your oil looks like a thick chocolate shake. This is coolant and oil mixing. This would indicate a need for an intake manifold gasket. Not a hard job just lots of labor. DO NOT DRIVE OR START THE CAR UNTIL REPAIRED! It will kill the engine bearings.
If you are blowing fluid out of the surge tank then this would indicate a blown head gasket and/or a warped head.
Over heating is caused by lack of thermal transfer from the engine to the antifreeze/coolant to the air. Either your fans aren’t turning , the coolant has turned to sludge, your coolant level is low, your thermostat is stuck shut or your radiator is blocked or all of these problems. Crack open the coolant tank and look at the coolant. Is it topped off? Is it orange, brown, green? Is it gelled? This is orange and green coolant mixed together. They don’t mix!
A full coolant flush with an acid treatment will take care of that. If you still have the original radiator it may cause leaks at the seals to the plastic side tanks because the sludge has “glued” the leaks shut.
Bogging down and sluggish acceleration may be a sign that you need to TUNE IT UP! Plugs & wires are all that’s really needed for a tune up on this model.
I do suspect though after all this typing and guess work you may have a blown head gasket. it would cause over heating, sluggish performance, poor starting and idle. It is an expensive job relative to the value of a 98 Malibu with 157K miles. Figure at minimum 1000.00 with rebuilt heads.
Q: Where is the turn signal fuse for a 2005 chevrolet malibu maxx?
For my 2005 chevrolet malibu maxx, the front left turn signal isn’t working. I changed the bulb & still the bulb comes on; but doesn’t blink. Per the manual, there’s 3 fuse boxes. However, none of the fuses are called “turn signal.” One is called “left headlamp low beam.”
In summary, does anyone the location for the turn signal fuse for a 2005 chevrolet malibu maxx? Thanks
A: You want the fuse panel behind the left trim panel in the trunk. Why GM put it there I will never be able to figure out.
Have you had to replace any steering components yet?
Q: What would make an ABS brake light come on the dash of a 1997 Chevrolet Malibu?
I have a 1997 Chevrolet Malibu and every once in a while the ABS brake light comes up on my dash…and then it will go out for a day or so and then come back on again.
A: ABS is computer controlled. It is performing a continuous check on itself to assure proper operation in case of an accident. An intermittent ABS light may be a minor issue but should be looked at immediately given its importance. The potential failures are numerous so I can’t guess.
Good Luck!
Q: Do you think the new Chevrolet Malibu will hold its value well?
Do you think the new Chevrolet Malibu will hold its value well. I really like the car but not sure if it will hold its value well. Im looking at used LTs and LTZs and I dont know how long ill keep the vehicle but I dont want to owe more than its worth
A: Yes but it will still loose value, just not as much as something like a Toyota will.
Q: 2005 Chevrolet Malibu, factory welds on the drivers side seat track have failed, dealer says its not covered u?
I have a 2005 Chevrolet malibu, the drivers seat track welds have failed. Dealer says its not covered..what now?
A: The only leverage they have is that your probably out of warranty. To keep you in good customer relations and possible repeat sales, they should take care of it.Your next step is to contact the area representative to get some leverage about a safety issue. You have a rare case but there could be a whole line of cars that were built that week that may have the same problem.

Q: How much can I get out of my car? It’s a 2001 Chevy Chevrolet Malibu.?
I am thinking of selling my 2001 Chevrolet Malibu (it has about 130,000 miles on it) because it is leaking antifreeze. It did this once before and eventually the head gaskets blew & head cracked. I had to spend about $600 to get it fixed, and now it is happening again. I don’t know if I should sell it or buy a new motor, so I have a few questions:
1. How much could I get out of my car if I sell it in the condition it is in? It has 130,000 miles on it.
2. If I decided to buy a new motor, where would I buy it from and how much would it cost?
3. Is there anywhere I could buy wrecked cars? I’m sure I could get a wrecked 01 Malibu and put the motor from it into my car.
4. I have heard that all 01 Malibus have poorly built motors. Is this true?
5. What should I do? Sell my car & buy a whole new car or just get a new motor for my car?
Thank you guys!!
A: If your car came with the 3100 motor, then they are well known to have problems with the Lower Intake Manifold or LIM gasket.
1. Depends really on the overall condition of the car, and how much a perspective buyer was willing to pay for it.
2.You can get remanufactured motors for your car from places like Jasper and similar companies. They are usually in the phone book under ‘auto parts, used’.
3. Do a search for rebuildable cars on the internet. They usually are fairly priced, but the shipping may be a pain, plus you end up having another car to get rid of.
4. Like I said above, the V6s had gasket issues, but if your car came with “Dex-Cool” antifreeze in it, get it removed, and replace it with standard green coolant. That dex-cool stuff is pure garbage.
5.This is your choice. If you have the technical know-how to do it yourself, then do a motor swap or get the current one rebuilt. If you are just trying to cut your losses, sell it and buy a different car. GM has addressed the manifold gasket issue, and as long as the new gaskets are metal, they will hold up better. Also, do not run Dex-Cool in your car, even if it came from the factory like that. It is junk and eats metal parts due to electrolysis.
Hope this helps, and good luck!
Q: How much will it cost to replace the transmission (Automatic – Chevrolet Malibu 1999)?
How much will it cost to replace the transmission ?? or fix transmission… I know that sometimes can be $5 and sometimes $1000… so Im looking for some pricing of fixing or/and replacing transmission in Chevrolet Malibu 1999…. Im looking for full price if replacing (parts and labor) …. I know that maybe this is not gonna be worthy to replace transmission but oo welll…. I need to do something
A: GO TO THIS WEBSITE ( http://www.car-part.com/index.htm )
AND LOOK FOR YOUR TRANSMISSION. PRICES RANGE FROM 75.00 TO 1000.00 FOR A USED TRANS. THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF TRANS FOR YOUR CAR AVAILABLE WHICH IS GOOD FOR YOU. IT MAKES THEM CHEAPER!! THESE ARE USED TRANS BUT MOST ARE JUST AS GOOD AS BEING REBUILT. CHECK WITH YOUR LOCAL MECHANIC AND SEE HOW MUCH LABOR WILL BE. SHOULDN’T BE MORE THAN 5 OR 600 DOLLARS.
GOOD LUCK AND REMEMBER USED PARTS SAVE MONEY!!
Q: Anybody have problems with their 2000 Chevrolet Malibu overheating?
Our Chevy Malibu has been overheating anytime we drive it further than 2 or 3 miles. We already replaced the thermostat and the coolant cap, and added water/coolant. That didn’t help. I’ve asked around and it seems that it could be the water pump or the head gasket. Anybody else run into this problem? What did it cost to have it repaired?
Thanks everybody for the suggestions! I’ll check with my husband later and go over all this with him.
A: That car overheating that quickly I would lean towards a water pump. If it’s not addressed before overheating it real bad it will be a head gasket.
Q: 1998 Chevrolet Malibu making noise as if my car is dragging something. What could be wrong?
The car, a 1998 Chevy Malibu LS, sounds like it dragging something when I drive and inside the cabin it sounds like something is rubbing. When I looked at my right side tire the spring or strut or shock or whatever it is is ON the tire.
What went wrong, what needs to be repaired, and what might the cost be?
Thanks, C.L.
A: i believe on seized brake calliper(s)
